Tension Rises Ahead of Planned Kikuyu Rally as Leaders Vow to Proceed

A political standoff is brewing in Kikuyu Constituency following a high-level meeting between a national political figure and local leaders affiliated with the Democratic Change Party (DCP), culminating in the announcement of a public rally scheduled for Saturday, April 11.
Speaking after the meeting held earlier Tuesday morning, the leader confirmed accepting an invitation from DCP officials to address residents at Kikuyu Township at 1:00 PM. The event is also expected to draw prominent figures, with invitations extended to principals of the United Alternative Government coalition.

The planned rally, however, comes amid rising political tensions in the area. Concerns have been raised over alleged threats issued by Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wa, who is accused of warning against holding opposition gatherings in the constituency.
According to the visiting leader, local DCP officials urged him not to be intimidated, despite claims that violence could be mobilized to disrupt the meeting. In response, he emphasized that Kikuyu, like all parts of Kenya, is governed by constitutional protections that guarantee freedom of assembly and association.
“Kikuyu constituency is part of the Republic of Kenya, and the rule of law applies here just as it does elsewhere,” he said, underscoring the importance of upholding democratic rights.
DCP leaders, for their part, assured that adequate measures would be taken to ensure the safety of both leaders and members of the public attending the rally. They further alleged attempts to interfere with security arrangements, including claims that certain law enforcement officers had been compromised accusations that could not be independently verified at the time of publication.
The situation highlights the increasingly charged political climate as rival factions compete for influence in key constituencies. Despite the tensions, organizers insist the rally will proceed as planned, framing it as part of a broader national push for political change. “Our journey to liberate this country remains unstoppable,” the leader declared. “We will not be deterred by threats of violence here in Kikuyu or anywhere else in the nation.”
Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement regarding the rally or the allegations raised.
