Gen Z Vote: How the Niko Kadi Movement Could Decide Kenya’s 2027 Election

As Kenya’s 2027 general election approaches, political analysts are turning their attention to an unprecedented force — the youth voter bloc mobilised under the “Niko Kadi” banner.

The movement emerged from the same Gen Z energy that powered the 2024 anti-finance bill protests. What began as social media hashtags has evolved into a structured voter registration and civic education campaign operating across all 47 counties.

Data suggests that if current registration trends hold, first-time voters under 30 could account for over 8 million registered voters by election day — enough to determine the presidential race outcome.

“This generation is not interested in tribal arithmetic or political dynasties. They want to talk about jobs, housing, and digital rights,” says Dr. Mutuma Ruteere, a political science professor at the University of Nairobi.
